I'm interested in the short and long term effects of diet in influencing human health and behavior. As a part of this, I am most intrigued by the role of the gut microbiome in dictating the way our bodies metabolize and interact with the substances we put into out bodies--mainly food. How might seemingly mundane daily decisions such as our choice of dinner affect our the microbes living within us, and how might this in turn affect our own physiology and behavior? I find the topic gut microbiome extremely compelling because it necessitates the intersection of different fields, such as immunology, public health, nutrition and human evolution.
